Adding House to House
God tells Isaiah of his anger:
Woe to those who join house to house,
who lay field to field, until there is no room,
and you are made to dwell alone in the midst of the land!
Isaiah 5:8 (WEB)
To me this speaks of a few issues:
1) People who are so amazingly rich they just keep on buying houses.
Why is this a problem? A) how many houses does a person need? B) Their "investments" facilitate the upward spiral of housing costs. C) Many rich folks still "over extend" themselves in their race to get even more rich. When poor folks over extend themselves, the poor folks pay and there are minor consequences for the rest of us. When the rich folks over extend themselves, the consequences have vastly more significance for the rest of us.
2) People who believe a burgeoning human population will solve our problems, thus the cram us in whatever spaces they find to jam us.
Why is this a problem? A) the earth can only sustain so many people before it wears out [Isaiah 51:6], God tells us the earth must rest every so often, or he will take the side of the land, and drive the humans from it [] B) part of the reason they love growing populations is it means there will always be impoverished people they can take advantage of, as well as an opportunity to pat themselves on the back for occasionally helping them.
Think I'm lying, misrepresenting things, or confused? Read all Isaiah. Take a little bit more time and read the other prophets too.
If this doesn't apply to you, don't worry.
If this does apply to you, worry, and repent. But don't worry about acts of malice from me, I'm praying for you, not aiming you for a pit, I'm trying to help you out of it. God said vengeance is his, so I don't touch it. []
