Golden Rule and Non-Golden Rule Behavior: No Religion Required
Making Decisions
Need help when trying to make a decision? (This is actually humorously ironic since I usually advise against "one-dimensional number-line thinking", and I'm not really advising it here, although it may seem that way.
)
Try to question in the form of "Is this a Golden Rule thing to do, or is this a Non-Golden Rule thing to do?"
No Religion Required
Note this saying does not require one to believe that any god exists. ![]()
Even though many religions have spread this concept, the saying stands on its own.
The Golden Rule - Treat others the way you want to be treated.The saying is short. It does not require the memorization of myriad rules. It does not require one to try to think from God's (or multiple gods') perspective and what might, or might not make God mad.
I am a strong believer, and attempting-promoter, of sayings. The Golden Rule is tried and true, simple, short, and easy to remember. I think many folks like to reduce the complexity of decisions, as do I, and even though it may not be possible to quickly and accurately classify every behavior as being clearly in either category, I think it's a decent place to start.
Simply Stated
Golden Rule Behavior (GRB), Non-Golden Rule Behavior (NGRB)
Conclusion: Subjective Perspectives, No Fool-Proof Methods, Extremism
I'm not trying to reduce the world to a one-dimensional number line, but trying to give simple advice for simplifying decisions. I also realize that people's wishes vary with what they would like done to them, I'm not sure there's much I can do about that. ![]()
There is no "fool proof" method for getting someone else to agree with you. Terrorists take it to the extreme, if you don't agree with them, they will kill you. One sad irony that continues to point out their bad logic, and unacceptable behavior, is they even kill people who DO agree with them! And yes, I know, not all "terrorists" are rogue bands, many seem to be in governments and non-governmental positions. So this post is for them to.
Do not kill because you grieve for someone else killed. Let God dole out justice and punishment in the way only God can. Keep the list of pain you've caused others short. Make the list of your good deeds long.
Final Comments
The Golden Rule is not stupid. It is not wimpy advice.
Society is going to continue to grow, at least for now, isn't it better if it evolves towards everyone following the Golden Rule as best they can? Isn't that better than folks working to see how much they can take advantage of others in a predator/prey relationship?
