Isn't it ironic that so many people who mistakenly take Cain's indignant statement to God—"am I my brother's keeper?"—as though it was a command, seem to be the very ones shouting the loudest against an intelligent and compassionate healthcare system, like every other modern society has? One that is more interested in keeping people healthy and fixing ills quickly versus making executives rich and enriching their shareholders? Isn't this so much bigger than a miniscule portion of the population seeking enormous financial gain from driving so many to bankruptcy?
It's written that God asked Cain where Abel was. Well, Cain had just attacked his brother and killed him. [Genesis 4:8-9] God asks, "Where's your brother Abel?" Cain replies, obviously guilty and indignant, "I don't know. Am I my brother's keeper?"
Some people take Cain's statement as a directive that we are to be keepers of fellow humans. But what kind of keepers?
Yes, the U.S. is the most self-righteous bully of all nations in terms of locking up fellow citizens and keeping them in cages. So clearly some people see it that way, in a literal sense, and they profit handsomely — in terms of money.
Along that line is another notion many have, of forcing their wills on others, to "keep" them in-line (with what the pushy people think is best). So they try to legislate their wills on others making human laws, and if you don't follow them, then you end up in prison. (Thus leading to the conclusion in the previous paragraph.)
So there are many people who clearly think they need to be their "brother's keeper."
But it seems that when it comes to holding a single word — a word many of them claim to love so much — up to profit-making institutions that also seem to be in love with that word, those people are not one bit interested in lending a hand to their brothers or sisters or "neighbors," let alone being their keeper. What word is that? Competition.
Their logic attacks their very foundations. Those companies are supposed to be healthcare providers. Those people think they are their brother's keeper? But when it comes to providing healthcare, forget seeing them when there's only one stitch needed, it's too expensive. Therefore you must see them when nine stitches are needed and they can just take all your belongings as payment, payment that doesn't even cover the tip of the iceberg.
I'll tell you what's so wrong with our government, the exact same thing that's wrong with the people screaming the loudest against every single citizen pooling our resources for healthcare, like we do for a multitude of other services we depend on, they love money, greed, they think "profits" are a true measure of worth. They think big business is the answer to our ills versus our fellow humans (which form the govt. duh).
Dear people. Who invented money? Was it God or was it humans? Who invented society? Was it God or the Devil?
Am I a "socialist?" I don't know. I really try to avoid throwing labels on others or myself. But it really seems ironic to me that so many people are willing to live in a decaying society because they are not living up to the beliefs they espouse or shove on the rest of us. Instead of us pooling our resources and doing the same thing big businesses espouse, increase our "buying power," they don't realize that they are driving our country to ruin and it will also cost them at the same time.
Look, I realize our government has problems, corruption is rampant. Greed rules the day. And a new version of holier-than-thou ethicism seems to be taking hold, even in President Obama's administration with regard to avoiding the appearance of conflict of interest.
I, like most people, have zero interest in the government telling me what foods I can and can't eat, what other things I can and can't put in or on my body, or watch or say or do! But face it, the vast majority of us are not interested in harming ourselves. I started consciously avoiding refined sugar, white flours, and processed foods nearly 20 years ago. I'll bring up the subject when it seems appropriate, but I don't force my will on others. I fully think if more people avoided them we'd be healthier, but I don't want anyone legislating my eating habits on others. And I, probably like you, have no interest in some human overlord telling me what I can and can't eat or otherwise put in my body.
Does it bother me that some people stubbornly refuse to stop doing things that harm themselves? Of course. But often the issues that cause these behaviors are not the obvious surface issues and conclusions that are easy to jump to. There are many things in this world being mislabeled as bad, and many things mislabeled as good.
Please take a look at this poll to see if you know the answer: What did the Founding Fathers pledge to each other?
Argh, I'm really loosing hope we can wrest control of our government from bullies who inhabit it, the bullies who buy it, and the deceived minion. Maybe you can give me some advice, I've also set up a poll: Moving From the US, Where Would You Move To and Why?
One final comment. Mr. President, car insurance is not like health insurance. Technically, one does not need to drive a car on public roads, although developers, politicians, car companies, etc… have done their darnedest to make life impossible without a car. I guess it is possible to own and use motor vehicles on one's own property and not buy insurance. However, last I checked all of us had bodies, thus there is no mechanism to opt out from that tax. But like I've written above, I think the for-profit insurance industry is part of what is ruining our society and my choice would be to eliminate them, buy them out, something; then just put a nominal tax on something (food, for example) so that everyone chips in to cover everyone else.
I realize no one wants to be forced to be The Good Samaritan, but I sure find it odd that so many religious people are doing their best to walk on the other side of the road! But I am convinced that if we realized that profiting from others' sickness was itself sick, and we all pooled our resources, we could cover everyone for less that it costs us now! Wendell Potter has had a "road to Damascus" experience, he's among many who have seen the light and repented from their formers ways. There are other such organizations with similar members whose mission makes me cry for joy. Remember what Jesus said? There's more rejoicing Heaven for one sinner who repents that ninety-nine righteous people who continue to act righteous. [Luke 15:7] Appoint Mr. Potter to something, give him power.
