I think the religious leaders of Jesus' day considered him a liberal.

  • They accused him of eating and drinking with sinners.
  • They accused him of being a glutton and a drunk.
  • They said "if this man is a prophet he should know the woman touching him is a sinner," so clearly they didn't think he followed "The Law." This is also seen in a number of passages as they continually tested him.

Even though he thwarted all their attacks, I am sure they remained convinced he was not a conservative law-abider like they thought of themselves as, but they considered him a liberal and a threat.
