United States of America's Declaration of Independence

Introduction

There is a bit of background on this page. Basically, it is my interest to see the language of our (USA) founding documents updated from centuries old, to a modern expression. This is not out of disrespect, but due to huge respect.

Declaration of Independence

I started with the Declaration of Independence since it is the first major document published by our nascent nation. I tried not to use "big" or "uncommon" words like nascent, but use it here because I love language and weaving words. I have tried to make the language of my first version (which is not finished), understandable "down to" 3rd graders. That is a big challenge.

In the versions you can download, as well as the online version, you will notice I have not finished updating the language. It is fun for me, but it takes time, and lots of revisions.

View Online

If you would like to see the online version now, I have exported it as DHTML.

In order to see the disclosure triangles to work, you will need a modern browser.

PDF

Here is a version as a PDF. Depending on your browser settings, and some other variables, it may download or be displayed in a browser window.

Download

Here are the various formats available:

Each version is in a zip archive.

If you wish to edit your own copy, the first two versions are the best. The plain text version shows the two columns side-by-side, but will be very difficult to edit and update. An outlining program or program that lets you edit text in columns and cells is going to be best.

Useage

Obviously our historic documents are in the public domain and can be used by anyone for any purpose. I have chosen this purpose. :-) However, if you like my updated language, you do not need to pay me, but you do need to give me credit. Please include both my email address and web site address if you reuse my work. Thank you.

USA DOCS UPDATES

I love it. I was in a debate awhile back where I suggested doing just this (specifically with the Bill Of Rights) but was pooh-poohed out of the room by people who think these old docs are no good, updated or not (except for one person who thought they are just fine the way they are). The debate was catalyzed by a joke:
"We should give our Constitution to the Iraqis; after all, it is over 200 years old and we're not using it anymore."

One thing I noticed, as I am first beginning to digest all this info, is that I think we need to include a few more specifics under our "inalienable rights, AMONG these: life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness" ... I'd add the pursuit of health and healing, the pursuit of integrity, the pursuit of useful knowledge, and maybe a few more.

I too have met such cynicism.

I too have met such cynicism. It's very unfortunate they have this attitude. Using those documents is the best way to drive corruption out of power.

This is how various Christians need to beat back the evil posing Christianity, with the Bible. This is how the various Muslims need to beat back the evil posing as Islam, with the Qur'an.

Shoving these documents away, beyond arm's length, is only giving-in to the thing they hate: ignorance.

The best way, and the whole reason I put this online, is to make it available for others to update themselves. Like I wrote, "I think our fellow citizens' minds is where the updated version needs to be."

RE Adding Things

I am not against your suggestions of adding things, but let me add this:

We have every right in the world.

Documents, laws, contracts, licenses, only exist to take them away!

A quick read of the items you propose, to me at least, are easily "filed under" the aforementioned, and much more simply stated, "life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness." However, far be it from me to tell you what not to include in your updated wording of these fine documents! :-)

Related Tangent: Software

One last comment, somewhat tangential... this is why I prefer the BSD license for software compared to any other, including the competing Apache license, GPL, and others. The BSD license is 3 paragraphs long, easy to read and understand. The other licenses ARE NOT.

Here are some links to them at Wikipedia. Notice that the BSD license is the ONLY license they include on the Wikipedia page; it's so simple! Notice how grotesque the page for the GPL license is. I do not mean any disrespect to Richard Stallman, I think he has some great ideas, but...
